I’ve been on a cycle of starting and quitting English learning more times than I’d like to admit. But now, it’s about time I commit and really put effort into learning English.

Today, I learned the word captivating.

It’s a far more impressive word than interesting.

Oops, I’ve just used the word “far”, which is an adverb that emphasizes comparative degrees.

In this sentence, far is used in the sense of much or very, working as the emphasis of more impressive. Thus, it emphasizes the nuance of being far more impressive than interesting.

The whole sentence means, “It is a word that is far more impressive than ‘interesting’.”

Anyway, I typically default to interesting when I want to express that something is intriguing, but from now on, I’m going to start using captivating.
